Your Brings & Needs report builds on your CliftonStrengths® results, exploring what each of your top themes uniquely brings to a situation and what it needs in order to thrive. It’s a favorite tool for coaching because the concise, tailored statements are quick to read and rich for reflection.
Understanding the Two Columns
What You Bring
The I Bring statements describe the ways each theme can enhance a situation. Think of them as permission to own that part of who you are—and a reminder of how you contribute your best to a team.
When you know how each theme adds value, you open up more opportunities to use it intentionally, and you bring added confidence to the work you share with others.
What You Need
Every contribution comes with a corresponding need. The I Need statements name what each theme requires to perform at its best.
Identifying these needs helps you create the conditions where you thrive—and helps you recognize how to recharge when your energy runs low.
Putting Your Report to Work
Here are practical ways to use your Brings & Needs report:
- Anchor a goal. Pick a specific goal and highlight the theme contributions that will help you reach it—drawing on each theme for direction, motivation, collaboration, and delivery.
- Translate needs into routines. Turn each “I Need” statement into a concrete, everyday activity, and note how often you should do it to stay energized. For example, if you need one-on-one conversations to thrive, how many will you schedule each week?
- Reset when you’re drained. When motivation dips, revisit your “I Need” column to see what will feed your themes and rebuild your energy.
- Lead and collaborate better. Knowing the themes of those around you, look for ways to help meet their needs so they can offer their strongest contributions—and invite them to do the same for you.
- Tell your story. Use your “I Bring” statements to articulate what you deliver when you’re playing to your strengths—whether in a conversation, a proposal, or your résumé.
Reflect As You Read
As you review your report, consider:
- Which contributions do you already see in yourself, and which could you engage more often?
- Which needs matter most to you, and how can you meet them on a regular basis?
- Knowing the themes of others, how can you encourage them to use their strengths more fully?
- When working with others, how can you help meet their needs so they can contribute more effectively?
