Leadership Lessons from the Dance Floor (Part 1)

Sync Over Stubbornness: The Quiet Strength of Adjusting

Leadership isn’t always about being right. Sometimes it’s about listening, adjusting, and finding a rhythm together.

At a recent social dance, I found myself dancing with someone who was clearly hearing the music differently than I was. Our steps weren’t matching. I could feel the tension between the rhythm I heard and the rhythm he was moving to.

In that moment, I had a choice:

  • I could double down on the beat I believed was “right” and try to pull him into my rhythm.
  • Or I could soften, listen deeper (not just to the music, but to him) and adjust.

I chose to adjust.

Not because I lost confidence in what I heard, but because I saw an opportunity to connect. To sync. To build something in the moment, together.

And everything changed.

We flowed. We smiled. We stopped worrying about getting it “right” and just started enjoying the dance.

From the outside, maybe we looked off beat. But from the inside? We were fully present with each other. And that’s what made the dance work.

Leadership Lesson: Adjusting is not surrender, it’s strategy.

In leadership (just like in dance), we’re often taught to trust our instincts, hold our ground, and keep others on track. But sometimes, the most powerful move isn’t leading harder; it’s listening more.

You don’t lose yourself by adjusting.
You show strength by meeting people where they are, without losing sight of where you stand.

When we insist on being right, we risk disconnection.
When we listen, adapt, and stay open, we create trust and momentum.

💬 Reflection Questions:

  • Where in your leadership are you clinging to being right instead of being in sync?
  • Is there a conversation, project, or relationship where you could soften or adjust?
  • What would it look like to prioritize connection over control this week?
